An Analytical Study on Nurses¢¥ Attitude Toward Life

Abstract
The study was designed to identify nurse¢¥s attitude toward life through Q-methodology. Q-sample was formed through reviewing literature and interviewing (n= 160). 29 statements finally consisted of Q-sample size out of initial 100 statements through consultation with expert panel and pilot testing. The P-sample consisted of 29 registered nurses in nursing field. Data was analyzed by Q-analysis method.
The results were summarized as follows:
1. Four types of nurse¢¥s attitude to life was emerged. ¢¥.¢¥he correlation between type 2 and type 4 was negative (r= -.026), and between other types was similar.
2. The first type of nurses could be named as "the prima facie (conditional) deontologic type". They appreciated the life and the human. They expressed concerns to the other¢¥s life and sufferings. They didn¢¥t want to afflict the others with their own miseries. This group showed typical dual value system toward self and others. So they experienced the conflict with the concern of their own conditions and other¢¥s conditions.
3. The second type of nurses could be named as "the utilitarian type". The nurse in this type valued the life relatively according to the quality of life. They agreed to euthanasia and artificial abortion, if the quality of life was detrimented. The criterion of their judgement was the scientific knowledge and rationality.
4. The third type of nurses could be named as "the unconditional deontologic type". They agreed to the santity of the life, not because of the christian belief but from belief of the absolute value of life.
5. The final type of nurses could be named as "the Christian deontologic type". Because of the Christian dogma, they appreciated the sanctity of life. So they disagreed eutanasia and artificial abortion. And they disagreed strongly that the life could be created by scientific development, because only the God creates the life.
The nurse¢¥s value may have been reformed by the clinical experiences in hospitals and other nursing fields.
